Experiments in oil

The last time I worked in oil was 18 years ago, in high school.
This holiday I got a chance at last to buy some oil paints and start a painting.
I'd like to say it's like riding a bike...maybe just a little.
So here my first oil painting WIP. I'm pretty happy with it so far.
I've made a lot of mistakes in the process, but I've learnt a lot and I cant wait to finish this one and start another!
I still have to push the background back a bit more, I think, and detail the figures in the back a bit more.

I'm definitely going to have to figure out where to get these photographed...or I'll have to get a proper camera.

My Velocity Darker Forces: Degeneration Page

Here's a preview panel for the page I did for Velocity Anthology's Darker Forces: Degeneration.
Its an awesome collaborative comic project featuring the work of many South African and Australian comic artists.

This time I chose to work all digital as opposed to my usual preference of pen and ink on bristol board.

I wonder why I got given a battle scene to do? ;)

Demise of Nations game cover illustration

Finally the inks for my Demise of Nations cover illustration is finished.
Battle scenes like this just take a very long time to do, but its so worth the effort!

Demise of Nations is a game by Noble Master Games. Go have a look at the game's progress on their twitter feed - I think it's looking great!

Now to get to coloring this beast!

Corporate Comic Art: A Company Staff Superhero Calendar!

I've been pulling a few all nighters lately to get this corporate calendar commission ready for print before the year end. But it was an awesome job to work on so it was worth it!
The client wanted all their staff members portrayed as superheroes with some of the sites they work at in the background.
I was given total freedom and could pretty much do as I wished and just draw superheroes all month.
I actually really wish I could color these illustrations...hopefully I'll get the opportunity soon.

Romans and Carthage Elephants

Here's another reason I've been so quiet lately - I've been working on a giant battle scene for the cover of "Demise of Nations", the latest historical strategy game from Noble Mater Games.
These scenes just take an enormous amount of time to do because of the amount of characters. It's like doing a character drawing times 200, and they all have to work together and form a pleasing composition.

I'm starting to ink this beast at last, and I'll post work-in-progress as I go.

Check out Noble Master Games on Twitter!

Superhero Calendar

Over the last month I've been busy pencilling superheroes, superheroes and more superheroes.
It an awesome corporate calendar for a client who wanted all their staff drawn as superheros.

Here's a peek at one of the images.

Velocity's Darker Forces: Devastation

In the next month or so I'll be collaborating on Velocity Anthology's Darker Forces: Devastation.

Its an awesome collaborative comic project involving comic artists from Southern Africa and Australia. There will be two versions of the book, one South African and one Australian.

Each artist has one page from the comic to produce, so it will be very interesting to see how it all fits together! I've been given page 14 to do, which is quite a nice action sequence!

Here's the lineup for the South African version:

Check out Velocity's facebook page or deviantart page for more info and to kep up with updates as we go!

Oh, and here's a free read of the prelude to Darker Forces that appeared in Velocity, by Moray Rhoda and Daniel Hugo: Darker Forces

Gauteng Comic Shops and Book Signing

I just got back from a whirlwind tour of Gauteng comic shops!
What an awesome bunch of people! I was blown away with how much support there is amongst our SA comic shops for SA comics.
So I am happy to announce that Gofu is now available at Steampunk Comics, Outer Limits Melville, AWX and Cosmic Comics, South Africa, where I was invited for an awesome book signing with local Batman artist, Jason Masters, on Saturday!
What an awesome guy!

Gofu is now pretty much sold out. I only have a few copies left myself, but fear not, a second printing will follow soon, as well as Gofu #2!!!

Unfortunately I only remembered to take one pic ...but here's Jason doing his thing!

Gofu to become a limited mini-series.

The Four Shots Durban comic launch last night was a great success!
A big thank you to everyone who came to and supported the event - the house was packed!

I made a surprise announcement last night and I was relieved that people genuinely seemed to be excited about it.

Gofu has been successful enough that I have decided to turn it into a limited mini-series.
So I will be doing Gofu issue #2 over December.

We'll get to explore the world of Gofu more and find out who the gofu hunters are and why they have hunted to gofu to extinction.

Thank you to every single person who has bought a copy of Gofu - your support will make the Gofu comic a reality!
Personally I cant wait to tell more Gofu stories!

Limited copies of Gofu issue #1 remain available on my own webstore, at Readers Den, at Blank Books and at The Collective gallery in Durban.

Business Cards!

Just before the show two weeks ago, I got my awesome new business cards from my awesome friend, Nadja Oxborrow!
I love them! They are quite and unusual angled shape inspired by a panel form my comic, Gofu and feature my character, Tatsu from the comic on the back.

The whole thing was quite last minute, so we ended up having to cut them ourselves. But that's cool, we just made it a late night card cutting party with pizza all round! Thanks again for all the help, Nadja, Sam, Paul and Megan!

Gofu Mission Central

Can't say I have too much new stuff to show today... This month I am working on some BIG illustration commissions, so its going to be a while before I have new art to post.
Lets just say...Roman army...Carthage war elephants...and I love doing historical research on my projects!

But for you Gofu readers - here are some shots of Gofu Mission Central: my little art studio.
I draw Gofu on 14"x17" bristol board, which I then scan into Photoshop and color digitally.
As I finish the pages I like to put them up on my wall in sequential order so that I easily can see how the story flows, and make sure that the artwork is consistent.

Yes...the pink curtains must go...

Gofu is for sale from Readers Den, Blank Books, and my own online shop!!
International shipping available from all.

Video of the Gofu Launch at Open Book Comics Fest 2013

For your entertainment I'm sharing a video of my Gofu launch speech at Open Book Comics Fest 2013.
Please don't judge the awkwardness...I think this was my first public talk, and mercifully, the crowd was small and forgiving...
Shameless plug: If you can't hear what I'm saying in this video - buy the comic! It explains everything, I promise! ;)

Gofu comic launch at Open Book Comics Fest 2013

My first comic, Gofu, was launched at Open Book Comics Fest 2013 and it was a great success!
It was an awesome comics show that was part of the Open Book Festival in Cape Town and it was humbling to meet so many amazing artists and just all round nice people!

Gofu did very well at Open Book Comics Fest 2013, and I am very happy about that! To everyone who came and supported and bought Gofu - a big thank you! You guys made all the effort worth while.

I am back home now and I am selling my comic, Gofu and a few other goodies in my online shop - http://jumpsuitart.bigcartel.com/ - international shipping available.
Just click the "Jumpsuit Shop" button above and it will take you right there.
For South African customers who don't use Paypal, you are welcome to contact me directly (deon(at)jumpsuitart(dot)com) to make a purchase.

Alternatively Gofu is also for sale from Readers Den Comic Shop in Claremont and Blank Books in Woodstock for those of you who are in Cape Town but could not make it to Open Book Comics Fest!

The SA comics community is growing, and support is growing too. I was amazed at the diversity of the content, styles and themes on display from the various SA comic artists. I have started adding links to local comic books to the bottom right of my blog - go and support them, guys! SA comics needs your involvement!

I cant wait to get going on my next comic!

My wife, Megan - what a trooper! The Gofu launch would not have happened without her.

My neighbors, Josh Ryba of "Rebirth" and Luis Tolosana of "Philo's Wish". The SA comic artists community is just a bunch of awesome people!

Rico of "Madam and Eve" came around to my table for a chat - such a great guy and, for me, an honor to show some of my work to a legend of South African comics.

Nawhaal and Shaakira - awesome people!

New Gofu panels

RUMBMBMBRBRBBMB TAKA-TAKA-TAKA-TAKA

Sometimes I think adding the lettering and sound effects at the end when the page is done is my favorite part about making a comic book.

Here's another little sneak peek at my comic, Gofu!

Gofu will be for sale at the Open Book Comics Fest in Cape Town. September 7-8! Be there!
Lots more info at their facebook page!

Private Art Commissions

I've been taking on some really nice private commission illustration work lately and I'm open to almost any sort of commission in inks on bristol board.
Of course my preference is always to do my own original characters for you, but if you want a specific character as a gift, maybe a caricature or portrait of someone, perhaps even your cat, I'll be more than happy.
I'm open to doing wide range of subject matters, really, just ask!

Email me any time at deon(at)jumpsuitart(dot)com for rates, and to discuss your commission requirements.

This example is a triptych of 5.5" x 8.5" comic characters on bristol board, mounted and matted and was commissioned as a birthday gift.

There's nothing like hanging original hand-drawn art on your wall!

Three weeks to go to Open Book Comics Fest!!

We've got three weeks to go to the Open Book Comics Fest!
I honestly cant wait.
For those of you who dont know, the Comics Fest is part of the Open Book Festival in Cape Town on the 7th and 8th of September.
Its going to be a great even with many amazing South African comic artists and writers participating such as Zapiro, Lauren Beukes, Joe Daly, Rico just to name a few. There is a full list of attending artists and events on the Open Book website here: http://openbookfestival.co.za/comics/

I will have my own table there, and I'll be selling my comic, Gofu, along with limited art prints, and posters etc. I might even be selling some original comic art of mine, so come visit me and check it out!

So if you're in Cape Town then, and you like comics - you HAVE to come!! That's an order!

Here's my unofficial mash-up of Peter Woo's Comics Fest poster...

Gofu! Gofu! Gofu! Comic inks and midnight bristol board adventures.

I've been "igniting the midnight petroleum" as Data would say, working on my comic, Gofu.
I'm a bit behind schedule, but I seem to be making good progress and catching up as I get faster.

Originally I was going to do the comic digitally, but at the last minute I switched back to traditional. Good ol' inks on bristol board. Even though I can draw both ways, I'm a lot more comfortable drawing traditionally, and, it seems, faster. Plus, digital just doesn't seem real to me...it has its place and several advantages, but at the end of the day I feel disconnected from the work somehow.

I do, however do all my layouts and roughs digitally before I transfer them to board.
So I think I am using the best of both worlds.
There is just nothing like holding a finished comic art page in your hands.

Gofu Sneak Peek Comic Page!

Hi all - I'm in uber hermit mode at the moment, working on my comic, Gofu.
So today's post is a little late, but it's a goodie, I think!

Here's a sneak preview page from Gofu. As you can see, Tatsu's house is a mess!
Gofu will be available in September at the Open Book Comics Fest!

Double Page Spread for Velocity Anthology Issue 4 is done!

Caution! Giant battle scenes take longer to do than you might think!
Check out the double page spread that I was asked to do for Velocity Magazine issue 4!
Velocity 4 will be available in October at Rage. (Velocity just hosted a panel on about local comics at San Diego Comic Con!)
Go check out this awesome magazine guys and support all the talented South African and Australian comic artists that are published in this unique mag: www.gaining-velocity.com
It certainly seems that the South African comics scene is growing fast with support from awesome people like Moray Rhoda from Velocity and Open Book Comics Fest, amazing people like the Reader's Den crew, and local comics communities like Legion Ink.

In other news - check out my new comics website where I will be publishing my webcomics and everything to do with my own comics universe, Unknown Origins Comics, towards the end of the year.

The Velocity Anthology double page spread

If you've been wondering why I've gone into ninja stealth mode over the last two weeks, its because I've been working on a beast of a double page spread for Velocity issue 4!
I was told I could draw anything I liked, as long as it told a story, was science fiction or fantasy, and was PG-13!
Dammit, no boobies then... That pretty much killed half my ideas on the spot.
So I decided to do a scene from a famous historical battle that takes place in the history of my science fiction comic that I'm currently writing. You guys will find out more about this comic towards the end of the year.
So here are the WIPs so far. I'll be finishing it up today, so the color image below is not final.
The pencils and inks were done traditionally on 19"x24" bristol board and then scanned in in six parts and stitched back together for coloring in Photoshop.

GOFU. September. The Open Book Comics Fest

The next month is going to be all about my comic, Gofu, here at studio Deon!
Gofu issue 1 will be available at the Open Book Comics Fest in September...

GOFU! Introducing: Tatsu

Meet Tatsu.
She is the main character from my upcoming comic, Gofu, which I am rushing to finish for the Open Book Comic Fest in September. (So if you wonder why I'm scarce, now you know why!)
The fantasy story and characters of Gofu have been floating around my studio for a few years now, and I chose it to be my first comic book project because its a pretty simple story, but I think it's also something that you have never seen in a comic before!

Gofu will be a short introductory comic of 10 pages about Tatsu and her best friend, Gofu, who are forced to leave their home and search for safety in strange lands.

Keep following this blog! - lots more GOFU updates to come!

It's Comic Con week!!

It's that time of year again! Sand Diego Comic Con 2013 is this week, and I am still no closer to attending. All I can do is follow the tweets, youtoobs and stare at all the cosplay pics over the interwebs from afar. I'll get there soon enough!
However, this year SDCC seems a little closer to home, because the Velocity anthology will be over there, punting the comic art of Southern Africa and Australia.
Neville Howard, Moray Rhoda, Ray Whitcher will be representing, and hosting a panel about comics in Africa and Australia on Thursday the 18th from 6:30-7:30 in Room 4.
So if you're there go over and support!

I'll be following Rays posts as he updates us on Tumblr over HERE
And you can check out Velocity over HERE

I'm actually working on my submission for Velocity as we speak so I'm quite excited about that because its an amazing magazine to support. So local comic artists, go check them out!

Old figure drawing restoration Part 2

back to Part 1
Here are two more old figure drawings of mine, saved from the ravages of time. I think the first one needs a little more Photoshop work, actually.
I remember these figure study sessions with much fondness. I would rather have gone through a few more years of figure drawing that the last two years of graphic design. I think it would have actually been a more valuable use of my time.
I'll add some more soon.

Comic art pencils for One Nation

I thought I'd share a little teaser of a teaser comic I have been penciling for One Nation by Jason Reeves of 133Art.
Here are two panels from the project. One awesome shot of the superhero "Paragon"and another showing how this comic will put you in the middle of the action!
There's a lot of action and in this little story, and I also had to do a lot of research, which I always enjoy doing.
I've done all of these traditionally with pencil on Bristol board.
This has been an awesome comic pencil job to work on and I cant wait to see how it comes out.

You can buy and download One Nation at www.133art.com

Mischief

I got such a cool parting gift from my co-workers today!
Mischief. http://www.madewithmischief.com/
REALLY REALLY cool drawing software!
Feeling ridiculously spoilt!!

Mischief is a vector based drawing program that has an infinite canvas and infinite zoom.
But it really doesn't feel like you are working in vector. It just feels like you are painting in Photoshop. This means you can basically just draw without having to think about resolution, setup, canvas or any of that stuff. Weird and amazing!
Check the video at the link above - it explains it better!

Old figure drawing restoration Part 1

In my spare time, I have started digitally restoring some of my old tech days figure drawings.
I have tons of old drawings from throughout my life stored up in an old suitcase in the cupboard. I figured, you just don't know when something happens and you lose them forever.
So I've started scanning some of them and restoring them in Photoshop. Some of them have a lot of foxing, footprints, moth chew holes and all kinds of other gunk, that I am removing. But I still try and leave some of the feel that they are on old paper.
Here are the first two. I'll add more as I have time.
To Part 2
