The Making of the Appalchia illustration

Recently I had a wonderful opportunity to do a promotional illustration for Kyran Ford of Sleeping Sun Films for their American short film, Appalachia. It is a period piece set on the American frontier, which is a subject matter that I love.
I was given one or two shots from the scene they wanted me to illustrate, so I did some reference gathering as usual, and decided to pull the shot back a bit to give the illustration more expanse.
I also wanted the illustration to tell the viewer that a main character of the film is, in fact, it's namesake, the Appalachian mountains.
